Poi comes from an ancient New Zealand practice intended to increase the flexibility and strength of the hands and arms, the word"poi" referring to the "ball" at the end of the cord.

Now no longer a necessary exercise, poi swinging is an entertaining and energetic form of traditional dance that has a great many variations and histories amongst the different tribal groups of New Zealand.
