Backgammon is probably the oldest board game in existence. An example being found in a Royal Sumarian cemetary in Mesopotamia. By the 15th cebtury, it was played throughout Europe, when it was known as "tables" and it is still called Tric-Trac in parts of France.

The first reference to "backgammon" appeared in 1645, "gammon" and "backgammon" being terms for double and triple wins. It's modern popularity is mainly due to the introduction of doubling dice in the U.S.A. in the 1920's. By adding a controlled gaming element, backgammon became widely played in gaming clubs and established a worthy reputation as a simple yet compelling game for two players.

More than a thousand years before the great city of Carcassonne was built, the area was settled by stone-age tribes. These people hunted wild animals, gathered nuts and beries and caught fish in the nearby streams to provide themselves with the basics. Even today, there remain fantastic cave paintings and archeological finds that provide evidence of their existance and give us an understanding of their lives.

As with Carcassonne, the game of the year in Germany in 2001, the players play land tiles to create a beautiful landscape, with scattered wild animals like mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. They populate the landscape with hunters and gatherers abd build huts to live in. Rivers, filled with fish, snake through the landscape. The game also includes rare, but very useful special cards. There are many new things to discover in this pre-historic Carcassonne.

Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is a new version of Carcassonne, but retains the challenge, fun and excitement of the priginal. Players who know Carcassonne will pick up this new game quickly. Others will learn it as quickly as players learned and loved the original.

Now travelling merchants transport their goods to surrounding cities and monasteries. The cities in the surrounding countryside can increase to a size large enough to elect their own mayors. Simple farmers build large and wealthy farms and the church tries to strenthen their influence by establishing abbeys.

The new cards are marked with a small symbol so that they can be easily sorted out after playing with them.

In this Carcassonne expansion, players have the opportunity to build upwards!!! The lords of the region around Carcassonne erect towers to strengthen and promote their power and influence. They employ followers to stand guard on the towers, watching over the land so they can inform their lords of all who travel and move throughout the area.

Players may capture opponent's followers, holding them in prison. Later, the players may arrange a prisoner exchange, to the advantage of the players involved. Also, a player may arrange to pay ransom for the return of an imprisoned follower.

Fans of Carcassonne will enjoy the new tactical opportunities offered by this expansion.

The expansion also includes a special tower for storing the landscape tiles, giving players a convenient way to draw tiles during the game.
