It's modern popularity is mainly due to the introduction of doubling dice in the U.S.A. in the 1920's. The southern French city of Carcassonne was founded on an important trade route between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Because of it's strategic location, the city was often conquered and has known many rulers. As a result of this varied history, the city is famous for it's unique mixture of Roman and Medieval fortifications.

The players develop the area around Carcassonne by placing land tiles. each turn the area becomes larger as the players expand and add roads, fields, cities and cloisters. The players may also deploy their followers as thieves, farmers, knights and monks to control and score points for the roads, farms, cities and cloisters. As the players have only a few followers, the wise player will plan his moves carefully and deploy followers when and where he can earn the most points.

In this Carcassonne expansion, players have the opportunity to build upwards!!! The lords of the region around Carcassonne erect towers to strengthen and promote their power and influence. They employ followers to stand guard on the towers, watching over the land so they can inform their lords of all who travel and move throughout the area.

Players may capture opponent's followers, holding them in prison. Later, the players may arrange a prisoner exchange, to the advantage of the players involved. Also, a player may arrange to pay ransom for the return of an imprisoned follower.

Every time a landscape tile with a fair is drawn, the catapult springs into action.
The challenge for teh players : choose the tactically correct token, select the appropriate target, correctly estimate direction and strength of the catapult, check for wind and hurl. Will the hurl be successful?
If so, the different catapult tokens represent different effects, which can alter the game in significant ways. Thus the expansion adds a dexterity component to this great game.
